Quiche Takes the Stage

The incredible edible egg is not only one of the most versatile ingredients in the kitchen (and behind the bar for that matter), but it also has a penchant for theatrical performance. Is there anything this multi-talented ingredient can't do? Eggs take the stage quite literally as part of the critically acclaimed theatre production, "5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche," which is currently running at the Chopin Theatre. For the performances, a different local bakery is poised to supply quiche for each performance.

"5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche" was co-written by Andrew Hobgood and Evan Linder, directed by Sarah Gitenstein. It centers around five women congregated in a church basement in 1956 for their annual Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein's quiche breakfast. The feminist meeting is hinged on the motto, "No Men, No Meat, All Manners," which quickly unravels once they're confronted with the knowledge that an atom bomb may be about to fall on their city. Seemingly the only thing keeping them grounded and sane is the quiche, a culinary marvel they come to respect for the egg's wondrous versatility and deliciousness. Obviously. 

Since it would be cruel to depict quiche on stage and tease a hungry audience without doling out samples, the production crew has sourced different quiches from local bakeries for each performance. Following each production, said quiches will be handed out as samples for the audience. It started with Lovely Bake Shop on May 22, followed this week by Hoosier Mama Pie Company on May 29 and finishing with Southport Grocery & Cafe on June 5.
