Christmas Dinner at a Chicago Steakhouse

Nothing says “Merry Christmas” like a big beautiful piece of meat. The roast beef is the centerpiece of Christmas celebrations from London to Chicago, and in Chicago, you can sub out that roast beef for a magnificent USDA prime cut. You won’t be sorry you did.

Here are six Chicago steakhouses that are open over Christmas and that will prepare for you a steak-centric holiday dinner that you will never forget.

Harry Caray's Italian Steakhouse

Harry Caray’s Italian Steakhouse. During the holiday season, the motto at Harry Caray’s Italian Steakhouse is “Let Harry’s do the cooking and the cleaning up.” And that, mes dames et monsieurs, is a fine idea. The Christmas holidays are a special time in River North, with decorations and lights lining Michigan Avenue and snow falling over city streets. Inside Harry Caray’s Italian Restaurant, it’s cozy and warm and the USDA prime steaks will make the occasion even more special and satisfying. The holidays are busy enough. Let Harry handle the kitchen; you focus on having a good time.

III Forks. Open on Christmas Eve, III Forks is a fine place to wine and dine your way into the year’s biggest holiday. If you’re planning a grand feast at home on Christmas Day itself, maybe you want to go a little lighter on food the evening before. For simpler meals, III Forks offers apps that lean heavily toward the sea with oysters, ahi tuna, shrimp and calamari, and if you want to continue the light theme for your entrée, there are some fabulous fish dishes, including Atlantic salmon, Chilean seabass and cold water lobster tail. Or you could have a big, juicy USDA prime steak because…holidays.

About Last Knife. The Beef Wellington is exactly the kind of special event food that feels just right on a Christmas table, where it will look like the savory counterpart to a buche Noel, the traditional French Christmas log cake. If you prefer to eat at home, About Last Knife will prepare the fabulous Beef Wellington, wrap it all up for you to take away, and prepare a series of complementary side dishes to complete the feast. It seems to make more sense to let the professionals handle the Christmas dinner so you can spend more time with friends and family. About Last Knife is open Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

III Forks

Cochon Volant. Christmas Day at Cochon Volant usually involves a multi-course family style feast. On the special Christmas menu are traditionally off-menu dishes like shrimp cocktail, fried calamari, creamed spinach, roasted mushrooms, mashed potatoes, baked Brussels sprouts (you’re going to love these), and aged prime rib, all presented with French flair.

STK.  Open on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day, STK Chicago offers anything but your grandfather’s Christmas meal. In one of Chicago’s sleekest dining rooms, STK prepares seafood and USDA prime steaks that will knock your socks off the mantlepiece where you left them for Santa. Because it’s Christmas, go big with one of the city’s most impressive seafood platters (oysters, shrimp, Alaskan red king crab, mussels and clams) and then follow that up with a holiday-sized steak: we’d strongly recommend the 34-ounce dry-aged tomahawk.

Mirabella Italian Cuisine. If you’d rather not drive all the way downtown for Christmas dinner -- and we totally get that, especially if it’s snowing – consider unpretentious and cozy Mirabella Italian Cuisine on the northwest side. As the Italian name suggests, there’s a huge selection of pasta, but after that, you will want to dig into some of their signature steaks, including the Mirabella Broiled Steak and the Steak a la Fiorentina. And if you miss the fun on Christmas Eve, don’t worry: Mirabella Italian Cuisine is also open on New Year’s Eve.
