Get Cozy with Comfort Food in Houston Steakhouses

Kirby's Prime Steak & Seafood

Steakhouses are, by nature, comfy: traditional soft leather chairs, low-key lighting and warm wood paneling, all contribute to the chill-out vibe of the steakhouse. Some Houston restaurants add traditional comfort foods to that environment to make for a supremely comfortable steakhouse experience.

Comfort foods are not fancy. They’re the kinds of foods your mom might have made, using commonly available ingredients and a lot of love.

Killen’s Steakhouse. Killen’s Steakhouse has earned a reputation for being the kind of place you can kick back, have a beer (or a glass of wine or an expertly mixed cocktail) and get comfortable with your food. There are few more downhome dinner dishes than the chicken fried steak, and at Killen’s, you can have it upgraded with a USDA prime steak and good old-fashioned mashed potatoes and green beans. That, friends, is comfort food: not fancy, from the heart, delicious.

Papa's Bros Steakhouse

Papa’s Bros Steakhouse. With a cozy, family-sounding name like Papa’s Bros, you’d expect the steakhouse to be welcoming and warm…and this place sure is that. Deviled eggs are the kind of finger food you’d probably gobble at family picnics and other reunions, and you find those downhome delights at Papa’s Bros Steakhouse, though because this is an upscale eating place, the yolk is mixed up with a little lobster, the king of seafood. For dessert, even your mama would appreciate the Gooey Pecan Pie, served warm, with a big scoop of praline ice cream.

Genesis Steakhouse and Wine Bar

Genesis Steakhouse and Wine Bar was started by Josh Goldstein as a living reminder of his mother and the Kosher household in which he grew up – so expect many comfort foods from the Jewish tradition. There is (no surprise) matzoh ball soup, and on the Passover menu, whole racks of lamb or veal and whole briskets – as well as salmon matzoh cake, haroset, latkes, matbucha and other foods that call to mind holidays at home.

Kirby’s Prime Steak and Seafood

You have to love a place that has a separate menu section for Mac n’ Cheese, perhaps the ultimate comfort food, and at Kirby’s Prime Steak and Seafood, you can have your macaroni and cheese done up traditional style, adorned with jalapeno and bacon, and even with lobster (fancier than you probably had for dinners at home, but no less comforting). There are, of course, tremendous steak and seafood selections, and after you’ve had some food that comforts, if you’re in the mood, there’s a cigar bar to give you that satisfied feeling that you’ve eaten well among people who care about your happiness.
