Cleveland's Best Surf & Turf

Located in the middle of the country, Cleveland probably isn’t very renowned for its surf & turf scene. But you’d be remiss in skimming over the abundant options at local steakhouses, which are out to prove that the seafood part of that classic equation is just as savorous, fresh and delicious as the prime meats. Here are some of Cleveland’s best steakhouses dishing up their takes on surf & turf.

Cabin Club Restaurant: Any surf & turf with “Champagne” in the title is bound to be a memorable one. Indeed, this cozy enclave manages to put a ritzy spin on the classic pairing by adorning broiled lobster tail with a fruity Champagne beaurre blanc sauce. It’s adjoined by char-grilled twin beef medallions, Cabernet reduction, garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus.

Flemings Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar: Speaking of ritzy, the most lavish interpretation of surf & turf in town can be found at Flemings, which turns to some of the most opulent ingredients to help enhance its meat-and-seafood medley. Any of the restaurant’s steaks, be it a bone-in filet mignon or a Prime New York Strip, can be supplemented with a truffle-poached lobster with bearnsaice and caviar.

XO Prime Steaks: The best thing about the surf & turf possibilities at XO Prime Steaks is how customizable and flexible the options are. All lobster, crab and shrimp selections on the menu can be ordered by themselves, or as accompaniments to any steak, so the mix-and-match opportunities are pretty endless. If you want butter-poached lobster alongside your bone-in filet, you can do it. Want king crab legs with a Delmonico steak? Done. Shrimp comes breaded or grilled, available with anything from rib-eyes to porterhouses. You can also order any steak with toppings like crab Oscar and lobster Oscar, both of which are enriched bearnaise-based sauces with plump claw meat and asparagus.

Strip Steakhouse: From the quirky menu descriptions to the contemporary-yet-whimsical cooking, Strip Steakhouse is one of the most fun restaurants in Cleveland. It isn’t afraid to be unconventional and not take itself too seriously, all while sourcing rigorously and pairing uncommon flavors on the same plate. Or bowl, as in the bounteous lobster bowl studded with rice, sausage, corn, cheese and a boatload of succulent lobster claw meat.  Or the steamed, fennel-scented mussels swimming with Italian sausage.

Hyde Park Steakhouse: One of the Cleveland area’s most venerable steakhouse brands is wildly successful for good reason, as evidenced by their meat and seafood selections. Individually, these items stand out strongly, from the steak Cabernet and the butter-poached lobster tail to the lemony salmon and the lamb chops. But be sure and try them together to really up the wow factor, like a surf & turf that matches a 6-oz. filet with twin lobster tails, or even better: the steak a la lobster, which features an 8-oz. filet mignon served over bordelaise with a 12-oz. lobster and bearnaise sauce.
