Weekly Planner: Carnivale University, American Wagyu Tasting, Sushi Happy Hour and More

Humboldt Special at Bar Marta

There’s always room for more burgers to obsess over in Chicago. Bar Marta is stepping up to the plate with their own new offering, a thick patty of Slagel Farms beef cooked on a wood-fired grill and heaped with aged Iowa cheddar, charred scallions, housemade pickles and truffle aioli. Come on Tuesday and Wednesday for the Humboldt Special, which combines the burger with fries and a glass of wine or beer.

Carnivale University: Champagne Cocktails and Sabering

If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to open a bottle of Champagne with a sword, this is the event for you. On January 26 at 6:30 p.m., Carnivale will invite a select few guests at its Carnivale University event to saber their own bottle of bubbly, with ample guidance and help from the experts, of course. In addition to watching others slice open bottles, attendees will learn how to make three different cocktails and enjoy appetizers from executive chef Rodolfo Cuadros. The cost to attend is $35 per person and reservations can be made by calling Carnivale.

American Wagyu Tasting Menu at Roka Akor

In case you weren’t paying attention, January is National Meat Month, and Roka Akor has been celebrating accordingly with a very special American Wagyu tasting menu all month long. Available through January 31, the elegant degustation includes Wagyu Gunkan with Osetra caviar, sweet soy-glazed Wagyu short ribs with rainbow carrots, Wagyu flat-iron with maitake mushroom and egg yolk, Wagyu sirloin with spicy ponzu and wasabi and broccoli with ginger-shallot dressing. All for $120 per person. For each table that books the tasting, chef Ce Bian will talk to guests about the sourcing of their beef, what makes it special and how it’s prepared at the restaurant. Reservations can be made on the Roka Akor website or OpenTable.

Sushi Happy Hour at Hub 51

Chicago can never have enough happy hours. Especially when said happy hours include sushi. Hub 51 added an exciting new happy hour promo to their repertoire, wherein every day from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. the restaurant features half-price sushi. Another cool aspect is that the deal is back on again after 11:00 p.m., in case you’re looking for a discounted late-night snack.
