Weekend Planner: New York-style Bagels, White Oak Tavern & Inn Chef-in-Residence Series, and Jazz for Women

Try the Bagels at Craft Pizza

There’s a new pastry chef at Wicker Park’s Craft Pizza, and she’s amping up the weekend menu offerings with NY-style bagels. Fresh from Revolution Brewery, Julie Cohen is working hard to bring an authentic taste of New York City to Chicago by way of bagels. She’s from Long Island originally, so she knows a thing or two. Every Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 p.m. until noon, Cohen will be showcasing her bagels in flavors like sesame, onion, everything, and Parmesan. They’re available as is, as a breakfast sandwich, or topped with spreads like chive, cinnamon cream cheese, or vegetable.

White Oak Tavern & Inn Chef-in-Residence Series

The chef-in-residence series continues at White Oak Tavern & Inn, this time with alums from Portland’s Ned Ludd and Elder Hall in for the weekend. Lucian Prellwitz and Morgan Deeks will be cooking at the Lincoln Park restaurant June 4 and June 5. Under the ethos that “simple is best,” the chefs will be focusing on local, seasonal ingredients as the base for their American cooking with French techniques and Italian infusions. On June 4, they’ll feature an a la carte special, while the chefs will team up with White Oak’s own executive chef Tom Van Lente and sous chef Jeremy Loya on June 5 for a five-course tasting menu. The degustation is to include charred and marinated mushroom and cheese tart, lamb tartare, tagliatelle with smoked pork and fennel ragu, duck breast with leg confit crepe, and an olive oil and sweet wine cake with anise hyssop cream. The cost for the tasting is $65 per person and reservations can be made by calling the restaurant. It all begins with a reception at 6:00 p.m., followed by seated dinner at 7:00 p.m.

Jazz for Women: An Evening of Music and Fellowship

If jazz gets you excited, then make sure and stop by Southport and Irving June 5 between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. That’s when local jazz singer Elaine Dame will host a benefit concert at the Lakeview restaurant. There’s a $10 suggested donation at the door, with raffle prizes throughout the evening. A portion of proceeds from the evening will go towards the Chicago Foundation for Women. The event will be filled with jazz from over 40 local musicians.
