Sweet of the Week: Toasted Marshmallow Shake at Good Stuff Eatery

Nostalgia is a powerful thing. When experiences tickle our nostalgic heartstrings, we're inclined to love them and feel fondly. This is especially true of food, one of the most potent purveyors of nostalgia in that it touches upon all our senses. In terms of edible nostalgia, toasted marshmallows and milkshakes are a one-two punch of sweet comfort, each one hitting upon distinct memories in their own ways. On one hand, you have the toasty flavors and sensations of a campfire, while another recalls summery excursions al fresco. It's somewhat rare to find both flavors together, but Good Stuff Eatery excels on the nostalgia front in a big way.

The first Chicago location of the D.C.-based fast-casual eatery by Top Chef alum Spike Mendelsohn opened recently in the Loop (there's already a second location planned for Lincoln Park). Here, the formula is all about burgers, fries, and milkshakes, the trifecta of Americana fast-food. However, this is fast-food with a notable dash of panache. One can expect as much coming from a Top Cheffer. Everything tastes vividly fresh and indulgent without being too cloying or heavy. This is good, because you'll want to save room for the toasted marshmallow shake. This thing is a saccharine delight, transporting me back to childhood camping excursions in one thick sip. It's got the heady aroma of a crispy marshmallow, complete with whole toasted marshmallow nestled on top, coupled with the cooling juxtaposition of a milkshake flecked with enriching morsels of ice cream. You'd best tackle it with a spoon. One sip/bite and you'll find yourself strolling ever so happily down memory lane.
