Weekend Planner: Get Your Ice Cream Fix, Pi Day Rare Brews, Good Food Festival, and Crawfish Boil

Scooter's and Original Rainbow Cone Re-open

Who needs summer? There may still be snow on the ground (damn it), but there's a glimmer of hope in the form of a couple favorite ice cream shops (yay!). Coming back from winter hibernation, this week marked the seasonal return of Scooter's Frozen Custard and Original Rainbow Cone, two iconic icy favorites despite the icy sidewalks. In lieu of what that jackass groundhog may have predicted, the return of these two sweets shops harkens the first sign of warmer weather to come, so head to Scooter's for a concrete (frozen custard blended with toppings and sauces into one thick treat) and then southward to Original Rainbow Cone for a skyscraper-tall cone of sherbet and ice cream.

Local Option
(Study Pi, win this)

Pi Day at Local Option

Beginning at 3:14 p.m. on March 14 because duh, one of Chicago's most comprehensive beer bars taps into some extraordinarily rare brews. As part of Local Option's third annual Pi Observance Day, the Lincoln Park bar will be tapping 31 rare beers such as Maine Lunch, Evil Twin Imperial Doughnut Break, Jolly Pumpkin Yuzu Gose, and Pipeworks The Mighty Thor. Come 10:00 p.m., the bar will be doling out a Trumer Braurei skateboard and hoodie to the lucky guest who can recite the most consecutive digits of Pi. Just when you thought all those high school mathematics were useless.

Good Food Festival

Local, sustainable, and seasonal food is the focal point of the Good Food Festival & Conference, a multi-day spree of wholesome goods taking place at the UIC Pavilion this weekend. If you're a Midwesterner and you care about where your food comes from, this is the festival for you, loaded with artisanal purveyors, demos, beverages, discussions, and lots more. Purchase tickets and learn more here.

Frontier
(Crawfish boil, Frontier-style)

Crawfish Boil at Frontier

Winter may be clinging on for dear life, but you can at least pretend you're in a warmer climate this weekend at Frontier. New Orleans, to be precise. Get hungry for a homey crawfish boil on March 16 at 3:00 p.m., an all-you-can-eat feast of crawfish, corn on the cob, and potatoes prepared by New Orleans native executive chef Brian Jupiter. The cost is $25 per person and tickets can be purchased here.
