This Logan Square cafe aims to be a traditional 19th-century French bakery. Look for freshly baked baguettes, croissants, country-style loaves, French pastries and sweet and savory crepes. Black Dog Gelato provides custom-made flavors as crepe fillings.

Mark and Margarita Challenger, owners of the erstwhile Wholey Guacamole Mexican Grill, took a step up in June 2010 with this larger, more upscale Glencoe eatery featuring contemporary take on authentic family recipes. The restaurant is named for Guanajuato (pronounced "juan-a-wotto"), the state in the central highlands of Mexico where Chef Margarita Challenger grew up. Her menu offers dishes such as blackened tilapia fajitas, tacos filled with barbacoa (slowly cooked, pulled goat meat) and grilled pork chops lightly covered with mole poblano.

From its Edgewater storefront, the Gaztro-wagon, Chicago's first gourmet food truck, launched in July 2010, rolls around the city offering upscale urban street fare, such as its signature naan-wich, wrapping Indian-style flatbread around such fillings as wild boar belly, pork shoulder, smoked salmon and lamb. Logan Square got another hip new joint in July 2010, serving a small menu of pizza slices and whole pies, craft beers and Jameson whiskey on draft. Specialty cocktails are also worth a try, like the 1988, rum chata, espresso vodka and Absolut vanilla served up with a side of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Lighting, tables and doors are made from reclaimed materials.
