Billy Goat Tavern 430 N. Lower Michigan Ave. 312-222-1525 The Billy Goat Tavern dates back to 1934, when Greek immigrant William Sianis bought the Lincoln Tavern across from the Chicago Stadium (now the site of United Center). When a goat fell off a passing truck and wandered inside, Sianis adopted it. He grew a goatee, assumed the nickname "Billy Goat," and renamed the tavern to match. From there on the bar has a famous history, less, perhaps, connected with its food and drink than with its colorful owner, who banned visiting Republicans, rubbed elbows with celebrities and devastatingly cursed the Cubs for ejecting his goat from the 1945 World Series.
In 1964, Sianis moved the tavern to this subterranean spot on Lower North Michigan Avenue. The greasy, raucous, underground bar became a favorite haunt of newspaper people and admen, among them famed Chicago columnist Mike Royko and Don Novello, later a comedian (known for his portrayal of Father Guido Sarducci) and scriptwriter for "Saturday Night Live." The busy bar and grill, where Sianis' nephew Sam and another Greek immigrant, Bill Charuchas, kept up a running chant of orders —: "Cheezborger! Cheezborger! You want doublecheez? Who's next?! Who's next?! No fries, cheeps! Who's next?! No Pepsi, Coke!" — captured Novello's imagination and, as enacted by SNL's John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Loraine Newman in 1978, the nation's.
Now owned by Sam Sianis, the Goat has expanded to serve cheezborgers at new locations on Washington Street (Loop), Wells Street (South Loop), Madison Avenue (United Center), Navy Pier, Merchandise Mart, O'Hare and Washington D.C., though none of them have the dingy charm of this Lower Mich. site. Aficionados say to skip the regular cheezborger and go for the double (or for real decadence, the triple with a fried egg on top).

Irazu Costa Rican Restaurant 1865 N. Milwaukee Ave. 773-252-5687 Miriam and Gerardo Cerdas have been serving the cuisine of their Central American homeland in this tiny, triangular dining room since 1990. This BYOB spot is possibly more famous for its shakes than its food. The signature avena milkshake, made with oatmeal, has a malty, nutty characteristic; other options include pinolillo, made from cornmeal; sweet-tart mora, or blackberry; and delicate guanabana, or soursop. But do try the chef's favorite, bistec tico, savory, thinly sliced ribeye steak, pan-cooked to tenderness with sliced onion, green bell peppers and tomatoes, served with rice, black beans, sauteed sweet plantains and a lovely Costa Rican-style salad of crisp green cabbage, shredded to slaw and tossed with chopped cilantro, or the celebrated veggie burrito.

Ann Sather Restaurant (Andersonville) 5207 N. Clark St. 773-271-6677 Growing up in the strongly Scandinavian town of Osnabrock, N.D., Ann Sather learned home cooking from her mother, who was known for her strawberry-rhubarb pies. When she graduated from high school, Sather moved to Chicago and worked for her uncle at Lundy's Wholesale Meats. Two decades later, in 1945, she invested her life's savings, $4,000, in a coffeeshop a few doors away from the current location on Belmont Avenue. Sather's restaurant quickly became famous for her made-from-scratch Swedish specialties and luscious baked goods, particularly her special cinnamon rolls.
When Sather retired in 1981, she sold the restaurant to Tom Tunney, a 24-year-old graduate of the Cornell University School of Hotel and Restaurant Management, and taught him the business from the ground up. Since then, Tunney has expanded to this second full-service restaurant in Andersonville — decorated with original paintings by Scandinavian artist Sigmund Arseth — and two cafes, on Broadway and Southport, offering more limited menus ... and become alderman of the 44th Ward. Sather died in 1996, but the restaurants continue her legacy for "just good food at the right prices," and still prepare many of her recipes.

| Margie's Candies (Montrose) Child | Family | Friendly 1813 W. Montrose Ave. 773-384-0400 Since 1921, Margie's chocolatiers and confectioners have been producing luscious house-made candies, including hand-dipped chocolates, fudge, toffee and mints, as well as 18-percent-butterfat ice cream, famous fudge sauce and sundaes that even The Beatles raved about. Phosphates are mixed with soda water and fresh fruit; only the chocolate uses a syrup — and even that's made from scratch. Root beer floats froth with Berghoff root beer. The menu also offers a few breakfast items, sandwiches and diner-type entrees, including the "Hawaiian plate," cottage cheese, pineapple sherbet, toast and lettuce. Peter George Poulos, a Greek immigrant, opened the original shop in Uptown in 1921 as Security Candies. The current name dates to 1933, when Poulos' son, George, met his future wife, Margie Michaels (pictured). They became engaged in the parlor's Booth Five. Margie ran the business from her husband's death in 1954 to her own in 1995. George and Margie's son, Peter, owns Margie's today, and opened this second location in 2005.

| Hackney's (Chicago) South Loop | Chicago 733 S. Dearborn St. 312-461-1116 A family-owned business dating back to Prohibition, Hackney's hospitality started in the glassed-in back porch of the Glenview home where Jack and Bebe Hackney sold corned-beef sandwiches and beer. When the Volstead Act was repealed in 1933 they added a four-stool bar and started cooking up Hackneyburgers in 10-inch black iron frying pans, served on Bebe's homemade dark rye, just the way they still serve them today.
When the Hackneys died in 1939, their nephew Jim Masterson and his wife, Kitz, took over the business. The Masterson family still runs the original Harms Road location; a second Glenview site where Jim Masterson's grandparents once ran a tavern; and more recently acquired sites in the former Behm's in Wheeling; Poppe's Alpine House in Lake Zurich; The Matterhorn in Palos Park; and this newest, the one-time Moonraker in Chicago's South Loop.
Besides the half-pound Hackneyburger, made from fresh — never frozen — ground beef, Hackney's is especially known for its french-fried onions, sweet Spanish onions battered and fried, served in a hot, crispy loaf, and its original cole slaw, not to mention the world's second-best martini.

Three Happiness - Cermak 209 W. Cermak Road 312-842-1964 Popularly known as "little" Three Happiness to distinguish it from the larger, unrelated restaurant with the same name across the street, this intimate eatery offers carefully crafted Cantonese cuisine. Look for dishes like shrimp toast, wonton soup with roast duck, crispy-skin chicken and salt-and-pepper shrimp. If you want to spice things up, ask for some of Gary's chili sauce.

Ann Sather Restaurant (Lake View) 909 W. Belmont Ave. 773-348-2378 Growing up in the strongly Scandinavian town of Osnabrock, N.D., Ann Sather learned home cooking from her mother, who was known for her strawberry-rhubarb pies.
Since then, Tunney has expanded to another full-service restaurant in Andersonville, open for breakfast and lunch, and two cafes, on Broadway and Southport, offering more limited menus ... and become alderman of the 44th Ward. Sather died in 1996, but the restaurants continue her legacy for "just good food at the right prices," and still prepare many of her recipes.

Artopolis Bakery, Cafe & Agora 306 S. Halsted St. 312-559-9000 Opened in 2000 by the owners of Pegasus up the street, Artopolis is different in both style and substance from most Greektown restaurants. The combination cafe, bar, bakery and gift shop, open from morning till late evening, offers wood-fired Greek specialties, sandwiches and global pastries. They specialize in "artopitas," savory ovals of crisp puff pasty with fillings such as fresh spinach and feta; smoky Black Forest ham with spinach and kasseri cheese; or mushrooms mixed with kasseri and emmenthal. This bustling spot also offers a variety of Greek dishes from an open kitchen, a full range of delectable European-style desserts to eat in or take out, coffees, drinks and much more. The one drawback is that you'll have to hunt for parking.

| Via Ventuno South Loop | Chicago 2110 S. Wabash St. 312-328-1198 Jerry Kleiner, one of the City’s most innovative restaurateurs and designers is pleased to announce the opening of Via Ventuno. This must-see restaurant in the historic South Loop neighborhood already has the feel of a classic Chicago dining destination.
Literally translating to “Street 21” in Italian, Via Ventuno is located at Wabash and 21st Street. With a focus on authentic, regional Italian cuisine, Kleiner pays homage to the historical roots of the building and neighborhood. Once a famous Capone brewery during the Prohibition era complete with hidden tunnel, Via Ventuno’s building was a frequent hangout for Capone and his cronies. Richard Lindberg, local historian and author of Return to the Scene of the Crime, notes that this building was the first place Elliot Ness raided as leader of the "Untouchables" on June 13, 1930, seizing over 200,000 gallons of illegal alcohol.
As Kleiner’s first solely owned restaurant, Via Ventuno has truly allowed him the artistic freedom to express himself in a more personal and intimate way. He and long-time partner, Marisa Molinaro, have enveloped the restaurant with personal mementos, photographs and tokens from their global travels. Similar to a painter with his oils, Kleiner has layered hundreds of décor elements throughout the space, creating depth and interest at every angle. A collection of treasures are displayed throughout the restaurant and bar, allowing guests to get a first-time glimpse into the "life of Kleiner."
